Steven Gerrard said games should be played behind closed doors if necessary.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard believes the Ladbrokes Premiership season should be played to a finish – even if it means staging games behind closed doors.

Scottish Professional Football League chief executive Neil Doncaster claimed last week the coronavirus crisis “could make completing the SPFL season very difficult”.

That has raised fears amongst some Gers fans that Celtic could be handed their ninth straight domestic crown without completing their fixtures.

Gers received confirmation that their Europa League game against Bayer Leverkusen will be played behind closed doors on Thursday, March 19.

The Ladbrokes Premiership side said in a statement on Wednesday: “Rangers have now received official confirmation from both UEFA and Bayer Leverkusen that the return leg of our Europa League round of 16 tie will be played behind closed doors in Leverkusen’s BayArena next Thursday, March 19.

“Rangers regrets that supporters will have made travel arrangements but warnings and advice about coronavirus must be followed.

“The German authorities believe this is the correct course of action and Rangers respects their decision not to allow fans into the stadium.”
