Chelsea have reportedly not given up hope of signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Over the coming weeks, the Blues will proceed to significantly reduce their first-team squad, preferably before June 30 to help balance the books.

However, Mauricio Pochettino, who is expected to become the next head coach of Chelsea, will be given a certain amount of leeway to make his own signings.

If reports are to be believed, a new goalkeeper, central midfielder and centre-forward will arrive at Stamford Bridge, even though Chelsea are well-stocked for options in the middle one of those areas.

Recent reports have indicated that Chelsea hold an interest in signing Ugarte, who has starred for Sporting in Primeira Liga and Europe this campaign.

Such has been the level of the 22-year-old's performances that it has been claimed that PSG are ready to meet the Uruguay international's £52m release clause.

Ugarte is said to be ready to make the switch to Parc des Princes on a five-year contract as the French giants look to make substantial changes to their transfer policy.

The acquisition of a young player with potential would fit their strategy, yet it appears that Chelsea have no intention of allowing PSG to have a free shot at Ugarte.

According to Brazilian journalist Bruno Andrade, the Premier League giants are also willing to pay the fee that is required to instigate discussions.

Andrade says that Chelsea have gone as far as sending a representative to Lisbon in order to express that they are serious about finalising the transfer of Ugarte.

Should Chelsea get the green light from the player, they would naturally have to make a number of sales as soon as possible if they are to ensure that there are no issues with FFP.

Although Mason Mount plays in a different position, Chelsea reportedly have an opportunity to sell the England international for a similar fee with Manchester United said to be keen on negotiating a deal.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been heavily linked with a switch to AC Milan, while there is uncertainty over whether N'Golo Kante will sign fresh terms to extend his stay at the club into an eighth year. body check tags ::
