Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Millwall and Cardiff City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Millwall play host to Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon knowing that victory would put them on the brink of securing their Championship status for another 12 months.

Meanwhile, Cardiff make the trip to The Den aware that only a win will do if they wish to remain remotely competitive in the playoff race, with the visitors now down in 11th position in the standings.

Match preview

Despite the initial impact that Neil Harris made on his return to Millwall, it did not take much for the East Londoners to quickly lose their way.

Just one point was collected from a possible 12 either side of the March international break, including defeat at now-relegated Rotherham United.

However, on Tuesday evening, the Lions delivered one of their most notable and important results of the season, defeating leaders Leicester City by a 1-0 scoreline.

Ryan Longman's 59th-minute strike proved to be the difference, moving Millwall into 17th place and four points clear of the relegation zone.

With none of the top 10 on their remaining schedule, supporters can begin to feel optimistic regarding staying in the second tier, particularly when their side head into this contest having accumulated 10 points from their last four matches on familiar territory.

Meanwhile, Erol Bulut has voiced his frustration in recent times regarding Cardiff's inability to remain a constant factor in the playoff race.

That said, this is a team that have now prevailed in six of their last nine fixtures in the Championship, with their latest success coming by a 1-0 scoreline at Birmingham City in midweek.

Bulut's disappointment will stem from Cardiff still being nine points adrift of sixth place with four matches remaining, realistically leaving them out of contention for promotion.

Nevertheless, with just a four-point gap to seventh place, finishing as best of the rest is very much in their grasp, and would be regarded as a huge positive given the struggles of recent seasons.

Team News

Having played on Tuesday, Harris may be prepared to stick with the majority of his Millwall XI from the Leicester game.

If a change is made, Romain Esse could return on the flank in place of George Honeyman, but the likes of Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Tom Bradshaw are pushing for starting spots.

Murray Wallace, Joe Bryan, Duncan Watmore and Kevin Nisbet are all expected to remain on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Bulut may be prepared to hand a start to Rubin Colwill with Aaron Ramsey expected to miss out through injury.

Although further alterations could be made due to the quick turnaround, it is plausible that remains the only change, with the likes of Mark McGuinness and Callum O'Dowda staying on the sidelines.

Millwall possible starting lineup:
Sarkic; Leonard, Tanganga, Cooper, McNamara; Longman, Mitchell, Saville, Esse; Flemming, Obafemi

Cardiff City possible starting lineup:
Horvath; Ng, Phillips, Goutas, Collins; Bowler, Ralls, Siopis, Grant; Colwill; Meite

We say: Millwall 1-1 Cardiff City

With Cardiff having little choice but to go for a win, this has the potential to be an entertaining game. However, that may change if Millwall score first, and we feel the visitors could have to accept a low-scoring draw.
