Romelu Lukaku has spoken of how he realised that his time at Manchester United was over once Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to use him in a wide role.

The Belgian completed a £74m move to Inter Milan over the summer and has scored 10 Serie A goals for the club so far this term.

The player's departure was predicated on the fact that Solskjaer, in contrast with Jose Mourinho, preferred to use Marcus Rashford as the club's primary number nine.

Reflecting on his time at Old Trafford, Lukaku told Corriere dello Sport: "Once I learned that [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer planned to put me on the wing, then I knew my time at Manchester United was over."

Lukaku was used out wide during a 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates in January, as well as during the latter stages of a 0-0 draw with Liverpool in February.

United remain intent on securing a replacement for Lukaku, with Erling Braut Haaland said to be the club's top target.
