Paul Scholes: 'Anthony Martial is not a good centre-forward'

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says that Anthony Martial is "not a good centre-forward".

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has insisted that Anthony Martial is "not a good centre-forward" as the Frenchman continues to struggle for goals this season.

Martial netted 23 times in all competitions during the 2019-20 campaign, having been handed the central attacking spot in the side following Romelu Lukaku's departure.

The 24-year-old has found it difficult to make his mark this term, though, failing to score in five Premier League outings and registering just twice in nine appearances in all competitions.

Scholes has insisted that the France international is a threat in the final third, but the former midfielder does not believe that he is good enough to lead the line.

"Martial's strength, we've spoken about him being a centre-forward, but he's not a good centre-forward. I don't think he's got that movement for centre-forward, he's not good with his back to goal," Scholes told BT Sport.

"But when he gets the ball and he's facing someone, it's a different position. You see him going at someone.

"Definitely (he relies on confidence). He's a little moody and you see him. But once he gets a goal there's every chance he'll go on to get three or four."

Martial has scored 73 goals in 231 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.
