Jurgen Klopp: 'Liverpool did not overspend on Alisson Becker'

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists that his club did not pay over the odds for Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his club did not pay over the odds for Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker in this summer's transfer window.

The Reds parted with £67m to secure the services of the 25-year-old, who will replace Loris Karius as the club's number one goalkeeper for the 2018-19 campaign.

However, Klopp has claimed that the fact Atletico Madrid stopper Jan Oblak has a release clause of £89m means that Liverpool did not pay over the true value of Roma's Alisson.

"Everybody thinks it's a lot of money. It is a lot of money, but he could've left for crazy money," Klopp told ESPN. "The clause for Oblak, for example, is €100m (£89m), so nice! The goalkeeper market is different because it's not each year that there is anybody available.

"We didn't know exactly if Alisson is available or not, but from a specific moment we realised obviously he is available and that's the moment when we decided we want to go for him."

Liverpool will continue their preparations for the 2018-19 campaign with a pre-season friendly against bitter rivals Manchester United on Saturday night.
