Jed Mercurio drama Trigger Point is recommissioned by ITV, with the second series due to air in 2023.

ITV has confirmed that Trigger Point will return for a second series in 2023.

The news comes as the Jed Mercurio drama, which stars Vicky McClure as a bomb disposal expert, finished up its first series on ITV tonight.

The first episode has now consolidated to almost 11 million viewers, with subsequent episodes tracking at around 9 million.

"Thanks to all our brilliant cast and crew and especially to the viewers who watched in such large numbers," said Mercurio.

"We've received unswerving support from ITV throughout the production and we are delighted to have been commissioned for a second series."

Writer Daniel Brierley, for whom Trigger Point was his debut show, added: "I'm honoured and excited to be given the chance to continue Lana's story. I feel there's many more twists and turns in her future.

"It's been thrilling to see how the public have responded to our show and I can't wait to see what they will make of the next instalment!"

The new series will be filmed later this year for broadcast in early 2023.
