BBC drama head Piers Wenger says that Jed Mercurio is still "thinking" about whether to write new series of Line of Duty and Bodyguard.

Line of Duty and Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio is still "thinking" about the futures of both shows, according to BBC drama head Piers Wenger.

Earlier this year the BBC aired series six of Line of Duty to huge ratings success, with a peak of more than 16 million viewers tuning in, yet a seventh series has still not been commissioned.

Bodyguard, meanwhile, aired just one series in 2018 but was similarly successful with a peak of over 17 million viewers.

Talking about the two shows at a press event this week, Wenger said: "Of course, we're all massive fans of the shows - we'd like to see both of them return.

"Jed is thinking [about it] but I can't really say much more than that. He hasn't committed to writing either of them.

"I think if he were to do them he'd like to do it when COVID wasn't a thing because [Line of Duty] was particularly impacted in the making of series six."

Mercurio also served as exec producer on BBC crime procedural Bloodlands, which aired earlier this year and has already been confirmed for a second series.
