ViacomCBS partners up with Sky to launch the Paramount+ streaming service in the UK, Ireland and European markets in 2022.

ViacomCBS has announced plans to launch its Paramount+ streaming service in the UK, Ireland and several other European markets next year as part of a new distribution deal with Sky.

The service aggregates content from the ViacomCBS portfolio of channels, including MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, in addition to specially-commissioned originals.

The possible presence of Channel 5 content on the platform is currently unclear, although the company did confirm that the UK version of the service will offer content from Showtime and CBS.

The news gives rise to the possibility that certain CBS shows not broadcast in the UK, including Survivor, The Amazing Race and the US version of Big Brother, could become available to British viewers.

The deal with Sky will also see Paramount+ launch in Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, while it includes a new carriage agreement for the ViacomCBS portfolio of linear TV channels.

Paramount+ will be made available for free for subscribers to Sky Cinema, while other customers will be able to access the service for a monthly fee, which has yet to be revealed.

Sky chief exec Stephen van Rooyen said: "This is another example of how we are innovating for our customers and further aggregating all the best apps and content together in one place on Sky Q, giving them more great TV to watch than ever before.

"Paramount+ is an excellent service with a huge range of fantastic films and TV series, and our new, broader agreement with ViacomCBS will benefit both businesses."

The news comes just a week after Sky owner Comcast announced plans to launch the Peacock service in the UK as a free offering for Sky customers.
