Erik ten Hag: 'Rasmus Hojlund, Anthony Martial can play together'

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has insisted that he is not against selecting Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony Martial in the same starting XI.

Hojlund has been Man United's first-choice centre-forward since recovering from a back injury in early September, with Martial being forced to accept a back-up role off the bench.

There is currently huge uncertainty surrounding the future of Martial, as the Red Devils are yet to take up the option to extend his contract for a further year.

As it stands, the France international is out of contract next summer, and he will allegedly seek a move in 2024 if he is unable to break back into the side on a regular basis.

Hojlund has scored three times for Man United in the Champions League this season, but he is yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League.

If selected, Hojlund will take on his former club Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with Ten Hag admitting that it will be an emotional occasion for the Dane.

"When you have a little bit of empathetic ability, you know it is a special game for him. He grew up there, in this club and you know he will be highly motivated but that's for me, for the team and of course for him to send that in the right direction, the right balance," said the head coach during his press conference on Monday.

Ten Hag insisted after the clash with Sheffield United on Saturday that he has no fears when it comes to the striker's ability to become a regular goalscorer in the Premier League.

Martial, meanwhile, has only managed one goal in 10 appearances during the 2023-24 campaign, but the Man United boss has said that both of his strikers could play in the same side.

"It is possible. They can play together. So far we didn't do that in games but I can see that they can play together because Anthony Martial is also able to play from a side," Ten Hag added on Monday.

Man United have lost their opening two Champions League group matches this season to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, and Ten Hag admitted that his side "definitely" have to win on Tuesday.

"We have to win every game but if you see the group, yeah, if you lose the first two games then definitely you have to win, yeah," he said.

The Red Devils made it back-to-back Premier League wins on Saturday by recording a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United, with Diogo Dalot netting the game's decisive third goal late on.

Man United will follow Tuesday's game against Copenhagen with the Manchester derby at home to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. body check tags ::
