Alex Miller: 'Steven Gerrard would only leave Rangers for Premier League giants'

Former Liverpool coach and Rangers player Alex Miller suggests that Steven Gerrard would only leave Ibrox if "Liverpool, Manchester United, or Arsenal" came calling.

Former Liverpool assistant manager and Rangers player Alex Miller has claimed that Steven Gerrard would only leave Ibrox if "Liverpool, Manchester United, or Arsenal" came calling.

The Reds legend took the Gers reins in June after penning a four-year deal the previous month and has set about overhauling the squad in hopes of mounting a Scottish Premiership title challenge.

Miller, who was assistant boss at Liverpool while Gerrard was captain, expects Rangers to finish above Aberdeen this term and "go above Celtic" within two seasons.

"Rangers will mount a challenge to Celtic," the 69-year-old told BBC Sport. "And if you make a go of the Rangers job, why would you leave? It would need to be Liverpool, Manchester United, or Arsenal.

"Rangers will be some machine if Stevie can get them going. He felt he had too many of the same type of player when he came in. Too small. Nice footballers, but Rangers needed a bit of height and strength. Now they have a better squad and are better equipped.

"They don't have enough to win the Premiership, but they have more about them than Aberdeen. They will finish ahead of everyone bar Celtic."

Rangers, who last won the Scottish top-flight title in 2011, get this season's campaign underway against Aberdeen on Sunday.
