Phil Thompson: 'Liverpool must score versus Manchester City'

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson says that his former club must score against Manchester City in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has claimed that his former club must hit the back of the net in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Manchester City.

The Merseyside giants head into Tuesday's encounter at the Etihad Stadium holding a 3-0 advantage, and City boss Pep Guardiola feels that his team must 'play the perfect game' to overturn the deficit.

However, Thompson has admitted that he is nervous ahead of the fixture and feels that Liverpool will miss out on the last four if they do not score against the Premier League leaders.

The 64-year-old told Sky Sports News: "Liverpool have to score because my worry is that if we can score three goals in 45 minutes, with the qualities that they have shown all season, then they can do the same.

"It is incredible that you can be 3-0 up and be nervous as hell, but I would feel more comfortable against Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich with a 3-0 lead.

"They had numerous chances to finish [Manchester] United off in the first half on Saturday and I can't see them being that wasteful again, so this tie is definitely not over."

Liverpool are currently sweating on the fitness of top goalscorer Mohamed Salah, but the Egyptian played a part in training on Monday evening.
