Sports Mole previews Tuesday's EFL Trophy clash between Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Just days after they competed in League One, Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United will once again face each other, this time in the EFL Trophy.

They are part of Group E, which also consists of Scunthorpe United and Manchester City's Under-21s squad, but Rovers will simply be focusing on getting revenge after Saturday in the South Yorkshire derby.

Match preview

Doncaster Rovers travelled to Rotherham on Saturday to compete in the league, but two goals in the first half proved to be enough for the home side to secure the three points.

Even though the Millers went down to 10 men early on in the first half after Mickel Miller was sent off, Rovers were still unable to get themselves back into the game, suffering the 2-0 loss.

This added to the misery that Richie Wellens has seen his team suffer throughout the season so far, with Doncaster yet to win a single game in the league as they sit at the foot of the table.

With four defeats and a goalless draw, it has been a dismal start to the 2021-22 campaign which they will be keen to put right on Tuesday against Rotherham.

The EFL Trophy could be a welcome distraction for Wellens's squad, which proved to be the case with the League Cup, where Doncaster registered their only victory of the season to this point.

They were able to defeat Walsall on penalties but fell short when they played Stoke City in the second round, being knocked out.

One of the major problems that Doncaster have had this season is the lack of goals that they have scored, having only found the back of the net once this season, with Charlie Seaman being the only player to have got off the mark.

That has not been an issue for the Millers though, with Michael Smith having scored three times already, including a brace against Rovers this past Saturday.

Rotherham have had a mixed start to the season themselves with three defeats and three wins, as consistency has proven to be the issue for Paul Warne's men.

The Millers are yet to record consecutive victories, but back-to-back results against Doncaster Rovers could put an end to that.

Due to being in the Championship last season, Rotherham did not compete in the EFL Trophy, but they do have a great history with the competition having won it back in 1996, a feat they would love to repeat.

Team News

After making his debut for the club against Stoke City, 18-year-old Matt Smith was given his first start against the Millers on Saturday, and he could be set to retain his place in the team now.

Both Jon Taylor and Jordy Hiwula have been unavailable for Doncaster recently, and they will once again be fitness doubts heading into Tuesday.

Wellens did bring Tiago Cukur later on in the game against the Millers in a bid to get a goal, but his minutes are being managed due to his recent calf problem.

Rovers did manage to bring in a new face at the end of the transfer window though, with Newcastle United winger Rodrigo Vilca joining on loan, bolstering the attacking options.

Rotherham were able to secure the signing of experienced striker Will Grigg on deadline day on loan until the end of the season, and this fixture could see him make his debut for the club.

However, after scoring twice against Rovers on Saturday, Smith will also be hoping to be in the starting XI once again as he continues his form in front of goal.

Doncaster Rovers possible starting lineup:
Dahlberg; Knoyle, Williams, John, Barlow; Bostock, Close, Galbraith, Smith; Rowe, Seaman

Rotherham United possible starting lineup:
Johansson; Harding, Wood, Ihiekwe; Lindsay, Sadlier, Wiles, Barlaser, Rathbone; Grigg, Smith

We say: Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Rotherham United

It has been a difficult season so far for Doncaster and it does not get any easier by playing against Rotherham, who have proven themselves to be capable of great performances.

The fact they played each other so recently will provide the Millers with a strong psychological advantage and it is hard to see past them picking up another win here.
