Newcastle United looking to end eight-year wait against Chelsea

Newcastle United will be attempting to end an eight-year wait when they square off against Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The Magpies are currently enjoying one of their best campaigns in recent memory, occupying a spot in the top three of the Premier League table.

Eddie Howe has witnessed his side collect 27 points from their 14 matches in the top flight, keeping them within five points of second-placed Manchester City.

Newcastle have put together a stunning run of results since October 1, recording six victories and one draw during that period.

Since the stalemate at Manchester United on October 16, the North East outfit have put together a four-game winning streak, beating Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Southampton in successive games.

Should Newcastle record maximum points against Chelsea this weekend, it will represent the first time since November 2014 that they have prevailed in five Premier League encounters in a row.

Back then, the side managed by Alan Pardew posted triumphs over Leicester City, Spurs, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion and Queens Park Rangers before losing 1-0 at West Ham United.

Newcastle also have a 61-year record in their sights with the club looking to score four goals in three successive league matches for the first time since 1961.

Bruno Guimaraes netted in the closing seconds of the fixture at Southampton last weekend, earning his side a 4-1 win after the 4-0 success over Villa.

Meanwhile, Chelsea head coach Graham Potter is also looking to avoid a rarity as boss of the Blues in what is a key fixture in the race for Champions League football.

Chelsea have not lost three consecutive league fixtures since under Jose Mourinho back in November 2015, the Portuguese ultimately being removed from his position during the following month.
