Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Charlton Athletic will look to end a 15-game winless league run when they welcome Portsmouth to The Valley on Sunday.

Meanwhile, League One leaders Portsmouth will be hoping to continue their fine run of form, having won each of their last four matches.

Match preview

Nathan Jones has been unable to end Charlton's winless run in the opening stages of his tenure, with his first three games producing one defeat and two draws.

After beginning his time in charge with a loss to Reading, the Addicks went on to play out consecutive draws with Lincoln City and Bolton Wanderers.

Goals from Thierry Small, Lloyd Jones and Daniel Kanu helped Charlton take a 2-1 and a 3-2 lead against Bolton, but they were ultimately denied their first win since November by Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's 71st-minute equaliser.

Having gone 15 league games without a win, the Addicks are languishing in 20th place in the League One table with just one point separating them from the drop zone.

However, Charlton can take confidence from the fact that they have avoided defeat in their last five matches against Portsmouth, while they also recorded a 3-0 victory in their most recent home meeting in October 2022.

Portsmouth maintained their six-point lead at the top of the table with a commanding 4-1 home victory over Reading last weekend.

Paddy Lane, Marlon Pack, Callum Lang and Colby Bishop all got on the scoresheet, before Charlie Savage netted a late consolation.

Pompey have dropped just two points across their last seven matches, and they will have the chance to claim a fifth consecutive win in Saturday's clash with Charlton.

They are also looking to beat the Addicks for the first time since running out 3-1 winners in an away meeting in February 2021.

Portsmouth have proven to be a resolute side on their travels, having recorded 1-0 victories in three of their last four away matches, including their most recent away game against Carlisle United.

Team News

Charlton will be unable to call upon the services of Michael Hector, Kayne Ramsay and Miles Leaburn due to hamstring issues.

Sheffield Wednesday loanee Tyreeq Bakinson could come back into the side after he was forced to miss the 3-3 draw with Bolton because of illness.

Small is set to retain his place in the starting lineup after the wing-back found the net on his Charlton debut last weekend.

As for the visitors, their lengthy absentee list features the defensive trio of Zach Swanson, Tom McIntyre and Regan Poole.

Portsmouth are also expected to be without Joe Morrell, Terry Devlin, Ben Stevenson, Alex Robertson, Tom Lowery and Tino Anjorin due to injury.

In more positive news, Myles Peart-Harris is expected to return to the matchday squad after missing the win over Reading with an injury issue.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Isted; Edmonds-Green, Jones, Thomas; T. Watson, Dobson, Coventry, Bakinson, Small; Kanu, Ladapo

Portsmouth possible starting lineup:
Norris; Rafferty, Shaughnessy, Raggett, Ogilvie; Moxon, Pack; Kamara, Lang, Lane; Bishop

We say: Charlton Athletic 2-2 Portsmouth

Portsmouth may currently be enjoying a fine run of form, but they have failed to win any of their last five meetings with Saturday's opponents.

With that in mind, we think that the leaders will have to settle for a point against a Charlton side that has drawn their last two matches.
