Sports Mole

Championship side Cardiff City play host to League Two outfit Newport County in a club friendly at the Cardiff International Sports Campus on Tuesday.

The teams head into this one off the back of victories in their respective last outings, and both will be looking to pick up where they left off.

Match preview

Cardiff City kicked off their pre-season campaign on a good note following a thrilling 3-2 victory against Cambridge United on Saturday.

Steve Morison's men opened the scoring early on through James Collins but were pegged back before the interval thanks to Harvey Knibbs, but after they stormed to a two-goal lead in the second half through Max Watters and Joel Bagan, Saikou Janneh scored a late consolation goal to set up a cracking finale.

Off the back of a five-game winless streak, the Bluebirds have now won back to back games for the first time since March, and things are looking up once again.

With three straight friendlies on the road to follow Tuesday's game, the home side will be looking to put on a show for their supporters in this one.

Newport County eased past the challenge of non-League side Hungerford Town in a routine 3-0 victory at Dragon Park on Saturday evening.

James Rowberry's men broke the deadlock in the early exchanges of the game through James Clarke before further strikes from Will Evans and Chanka Zimba put the result beyond doubt.

The Ironsides have now won their last two games by a combined score of 10-0 having thrashed Undy Athletic by seven goals to nothing on July 1.

Ahead of the start of league action later this month, Tuesday's visitors will be looking to put together a solid pre-season campaign to help set the tone nicely.

Team News

Cardiff's Ebou Adams was hauled off with an injury against Cambridge, and it remains to be seen whether the midfielder will be passed fit to feature here.

Off the back of an impressive cameo off the bench in the aforementioned game, Max Watters could be handed a place in the starting lineup for this one.

Since arriving from Bala Town as a free agent, Will Evans has hit the ground running for Newport County, and the 25-year-old is one to keep an eye on.

Chanka Zimba, who is currently on loan from Cardiff, will be looking to score for the second game running and make an impression against his parent club.

Cardiff City possible starting lineup:
Phillips; Romeo, McGuinness, Denham, Collins; Colwill, Sang, King; Harris, Watters, Tanner

Newport County possible starting lineup:
Townsend; Clarke, Dolan, Woodiwiss, Lewis; Bowen, Willmott, Wildig; Evans, Zimba, Collins

We say: Cardiff City 2-1 Newport County

The sides have been in good goalscoring form of late, so we expect both teams to get on the scoresheet in this one. That said, we are also backing the hosts to emerge victorious at the end of the 90 minutes.
