Doctor Who supremo Russell T Davies admits to putting out some false rumours prior to Ncuti Gatwa's reveal as the next Doctor.

Returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has admitted to putting out some false stories on the identity of the new Doctor.

On Sunday it was confirmed that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will succeed Jodie Whittaker as the iconic Time Lord, first appearing when she regenerates later this year before starring in his own full series in 2023.

Prior to the announcement, the likes of T'Nia Miller, Olly Alexander and Omari Douglas had all been linked with the part, and now Davies has revealed that he was involved in putting people off the scent.

"None of you even guessed," he told the Radio Times. "He's so brilliant and so popular, he wasn't even guessed, so I'm feeling a little bit victorious here.

"There's been a few false stories and false tales and we placed a few posts ourselves, a couple of misleading things, and we're very pleased that that kind of worked."

Davies is already working on the 2023 series, with filming expected to begin imminently.
