Laura Kuenssberg is named as the new host of BBC One's Sunday morning political programme.

Laura Kuenssberg will take over as host of BBC One's Sunday morning political programme from this autumn, it has been confirmed.

The 45-year-old is stepping down as the BBC's political editor this May after almost seven years in the role and had been tipped for a move to Radio 4's Today programme.

Kuenssberg has instead landed the plum Sunday morning role, however, taking over from Andrew Marr, who left for LBC at the end of last year.

"I couldn't be more delighted," she said. For decades Sunday morning has been the moment to explore the events that shape us and to challenge and listen to our politicians.

"It's an honour to take the chair for that conversation in the 2020s."

Jonathan Munro, the interim director of BBC News, said: "Laura's the perfect host for our flagship weekend politics show – she's an engaging presenter and a razor-sharp political interviewer, and she knows exactly which questions audiences want answered."

Sophie Raworth will continue to host in the slot until the parliamentary recess this summer, with Kuenssberg's new show launching in September.
