GB News joins the BBC, ITN and Sky in the press pool for political coverage.

GB News has joined the UK broadcasting pool for political events, enabling the channel to have more timely coverage in future.

The arrangement - up until now, between Sky News, ITN and the BBC - sees the providers take it in turns to film key political events, such as a pool interview with a politician or a keynote speech, and share the coverage with other partners with the costs split equally.

GB News, which launched last June, was met by initial hostility by the incumbents but now the broadcaster has been admitted into the pool group on a trial basis starting from April.

The move will allow GB News to broadcast such events at the same time as its rivals, rather than having to repurpose the footage some time later.

According to the Press Gazette, the news was communicated to GB News staff by editorial director Mick Booker, who wrote in an email: "This is a game changer for us. It means that – at last – we will be on a level playing field with the establishment broadcasters when it comes to delivering immediate politics news as it unfolds.

"GB News is building momentum every day and entry to the Politics Pool will take us to the next level."

The channel's political coverage is overseen by political editor Darren McCaffrey and political correspondent Tom Harwood, with politics shows being presented by former MP Gloria De Piero, former Northern Ireland first minister Arlene Foster and journalist Isabel Oakeshott.
