England have put themselves in a strong position against West Indies as Zak Crawley hits a century on day four of the first Test match.

Despite trailing by 64 runs at the end of the hosts' innings, Crawley and Joe Root put on a magnificent 193-run stand to leave England with a 153-run advantage ahead of the closing three sessions.

At the start of Friday's play, Jack Leach quickly dismissed Jayden Seales for a duck, giving England an opportunity to spend the day trying to engineer a change in fortunes.

Debutant Alex Lees went for just six, his second poor score, to heap the pressure on the incoming Root, but the captain superbly supported Crawley who took centre stage.

The opener hit 16 fours to end the day unbeaten on 117 off 200 deliveries, with Root adding six boundaries during a slightly more patient knock of 84 from 158 balls before rain brought a premature end to the action.

Ahead of day five, a draw appears to be the likely result, but England will attempt to set West Indies a tempting total in a bid to start the series with a win. body check tags ::
