Result: Dan Evans wins in Surbiton Trophy first round

Dan Evans continues his return to the sport with victory over Thomas Fabbiano in the first round of the Surbiton Trophy.

Dan Evans has recorded an impressive win over Thomas Fabbiano at the Surbiton Trophy to continue his rise back up the world rankings.

The former British number two recently returned from a year-long drugs ban, but the Birmingham-based player has already moved inside the world's top 900.

Evans's progress will continue when the listings are updated next week, with three victories during qualifying being followed by a 6-4 7-5 triumph over world number 115 Fabbiano.

During the 91-minute contest, Evans broke serve on five occasions to set up a last-16 clash with Germany's Mats Moraing at the Challenger event.

However, James Ward is out after losing out 4-6 6-3 6-3 to Sergiy Stakhovsky, who famously beat Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013.

There were also defeats for Liam Broady and Lloyd Glasspool, who lost out to Jeremy Chardy and Taylor Fritz respectively, which followed Jay Clarke's exit against Alex Bolt on Monday evening.
