Talks ongoing to stage Champions League final in New York

A television executive claims that "talks are ongoing" to stage a future Champions League final outside of Europe for the first time.

Discussions "are ongoing" over moving the Champions League final to New York City in the future, according to television executive Jaumes Roures.

UEFA's showpiece competition is the world's most-watched annual sporting event, attracting audience figures in the hundreds of millions.

The final, or indeed any of the tournament's fixtures, has never been played outside of Europe in the past, but that could change in the coming years.

Following last week's news that La Liga chiefs hope to stage a match overseas later this season, the chief executive of Barcelona-based television company Mediapro has hinted that the United States may soon get an even bigger game.

"Talks are ongoing investigating the feasibility of hosting a future Champions League final in New York City," Roures told Catalunya Radio.

Plans to stage a '39th Premier League' game across the Atlantic were scrapped in 2007 following widespread criticism.
