Rory McIlroy: 'Tiger Woods's health is priority right now'

Tiger Woods has had surgery on significant injuries to his right leg following a single-vehicle road accident on Tuesday.

Rory McIlroy believes thoughts of Tiger Woods resuming his career following his horrifying car accident should not be “even on the map at this point”.

Woods underwent surgery on significant injuries to his right leg after the single-vehicle accident in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.

A statement on his website said the 15-time major winner was “responsive and recovering in his hospital room” following the operation where open fractures to his tibia and fibula and further injuries to his foot and ankle were stabilised with the insertion of a rod, screws and pins.

In an update on Instagram Live on Wednesday, Sheriff Villanueva said Woods was “not drunk” and that the crash was “purely an accident”.

In May 2017, with five prescription drugs in his system, Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence when he was found asleep at the wheel of his car and later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

World number two Jon Rahm said he hopes Woods will recover sufficiently to call time on his career on his own terms.

“I hope he can tee it up again and I hope he can have a retirement that he dreams about, like everybody does, going to St Andrews and standing on the bridge on 18 and just being able to properly say goodbye to the game,” Rahm said.

“Personally, I would love to see him win again and accomplish more things. Now, being realistic with everything that’s happened, at this point I just hope he can have a healthy life and enjoy his life as a dad and as an ambassador of the game.”
