Coronation Street legend Bill Roache has revealed that he tested positive for coronavirus earlier this year but has now overcome the disease.
The 88-year-old, who has played Ken Barlow on the soap since it began in 1960, last appeared on screen in the March 10 episode - filmed in January - but will now not be seen for several months.
The confirmation that the actor is taking time off comes after press reports on Friday night which indicated that he had been battling a mystery illness.
A Corrie spokeswoman said: "Following recent reports about his health, William Roache has asked us to clarify that he took time off work after testing positive for COVID.
"He has recovered well and is looking forward to returning to the cobbles as soon as possible."
Roache, who is known for his healthy living, recently outlined his desire to become the first 100-year-old working on a soap.
