Everton striker Cenk Tosun sorry for confrontation with Turkey fans

Everton striker Cenk Tosun issues an apology after being sent off following a confrontation with fans in Turkey's 2-2 draw with Tunisia on Friday night.

Everton striker Cenk Tosun has apologised after being sent off following a dispute with fans in Turkey's 2-2 draw with Tunisia on Friday night.

The 26-year-old was dismissed shortly after opening the scoring from the penalty spot for acting aggressively towards fans in the stands at the Stade de Geneve in Switzerland.

Some reports in Turkey claimed that supporters had thrown fireworks, with some hitting the striker's father and other family members who had made the trip to Geneva for the match.

Tosun had to be restrained by his Turkish teammates as he gestured in an aggressive manner - allegedly making a throat-slitting gesture - towards supporters.

"When I turned my head, I saw a quarrel with my father," Tosun told reporters at full time.

"I didn't know the whole story. I told them that they were wrong, threatened, unworthy of me.

"Character is more important than football. It was an unbecoming gesture. I apologise. I guarantee it won't happen again."

Turkey will contest a friendly with World Cup hosts Russia on Tuesday.
