Tottenham Hotspur have edged back to within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea thanks to a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

In what turned out to be a largely lacklustre game until the latter stages, Christian Eriksen's second-half strike from 25 yards out proved the difference at Selhurst Park.

Spurs began brightly and tested the opposition defence when Harry Kane controlled the ball as it dropped over his shoulder on the edge of the Palace box eight minutes in, but his ensuing strike sailed high and wide of goal.

At the other end, Andros Townsend teed up Christian Benteke to test Hugo Lloris with a low right-footed shot on the quarter-hour mark, but the visitors soon began dominating proceedings, with Kyle Walker spurning a number of chances.

Mauricio Pochettino withdrew Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama at half time, before Palace were forced into a change of their own as Mamadou Sakho was stretchered off the pitch following a challenge with Kane.

Tottenham improved as the game went on and continued to pile the pressure on their opponents, but it looked as if they would be destined for a frustrating draw until a strike out of the blue from Eriksen, who decided to let rip from range and duly drove the ball into the bottom corner.

The win means that Spurs move on to 74 points, surpassing their previous best ever Premier League total of 72 - set in 2012-13 - when they finished fifth.

Palace, meanwhile, remain 12th, seven points above the relegation zone.
