Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Head-to-head record and past meetings

:Headline: Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Head-to-head record and past meetings:
Ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash between Man City and Spurs, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Tottenham Hotspur will endeavour to end a three-game losing run in the Premier League when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou's side have slipped out of the top four and down to fifth place in the table after suffering defeats to Chelsea, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa, losing 2-1 at home to the latter last weekend.

Man City, meanwhile, have surrendered top spot to Arsenal after drawing their last two league matches with Chelsea and Liverpool either side of the international break, playing out a 1-1 draw with the Reds on home soil last Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's men returned to winning ways in midweek, though, as they came from behind to beat RB Leipzig 3-2 in the Champions League and have subsequently extended their unbeaten run at the Etihad in all competitions to 27 games, so they will fancy their chances of claiming another positive result against an injury-ravaged Spurs outfit this weekend.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two teams.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 168
Man City wins: 66
Draws: 36
Spurs wins: 66

Man City and Tottenham enter the 169th meeting between one another with exactly the same record, as they have both won 66 matches each and drawn the remaining 36 games over a 114-year period.

However, in the Premier League era (since 1992-93), Spurs have beaten Man City on 28 occasions across 52 meetings and have drawn the other seven, while they have also fared slightly better in cup competitions, winning 10 times and drawing three of their 20 encounters across the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Champions League.

One of the most memorable fixtures between these two clubs was the Champions League quarter-final clash in 2019 when Spurs edged past Man City via the away goals rule following a 4-4 aggregate draw; the Citizens suffered VAR heartache in the second leg despite winning a thrilling contest 4-3 at the Etihad. Man City got their revenge in the EFL Cup final two years later, though, with Aymeric Laporte scoring eight minutes from time to seal a 1-0 triumph at Wembley.

Over the last 19 years, 39 of the last 43 encounters between these two teams have taken place in the Premier League, and Spurs enjoyed an impressive spell of dominance at the beginning of this run as they won 11 games out of 12 between December 2004 and May 2010, including seven wins by a 2-1 scoreline.

However, Man City responded in emphatic fashion by winning eight of the next 10 between August 2010 and May 2015 - scoring 27 goals in the process - including two 5-1 away victories and a 6-0 thumping on home soil.

Since September 2015, there has been little to separate these two clubs, but Spurs have just edged it with nine wins compared to Man City's eight in 19 meetings across all competitions, with five of those victories for the Lilywhites coming in the last eight encounters.

The Citizens have not enjoyed their recent visits to the white side of North London, as they have lost each of their last five trips without scoring. However, they have fared better on home soil as Tottenham have only won one of their last eight visits to the Etihad – a enthralling 3-2 victory in February 2022 in which Harry Kane netted a dramatic 95th-minute winner.

Last season, Man City claimed maximum points in a bizarre home encounter with Spurs in January, as they came from two goals down at half time to win 4-2 courtesy of second-half strikes from Riyad Mahrez (2), Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez. Tottenham came out on top less than three weeks later in the reverse fixture, though, with Kane scoring the only goal in a narrow 1-0 win to surpass Jimmy Greaves as the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

Only Jermain Defoe (seven) has scored more goals for Tottenham against Man City than both Kane and Robbie Keane (five), but the highest-scoring player in this fixture is Citizens legend Sergio Aguero, who netted 12 times in 18 games, including all four in a 4-1 home victory in October 2014.
