Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi 'both snubbed in Ballon d'Or final three'

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will reportedly both miss out on a place in the final three for the Ballon d'Or, guaranteeing a new winner for the first time since 2007.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will reportedly both miss out on a place in the final three for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award.

The duo have shared the highest individual prize in football on five occasions apiece since 2008, with no other player in history having won the award more often than the perennial rivals.

However, Luka Modric is expected to break their duopoly this year, having also won the top prize in The Best FIFA awards following a campaign which saw him win a third successive Champions League and lead Croatia to their first ever World Cup final.

Kaka in 2007 was the last player other than Messi or Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or, but Italian outfit Tuttosport reports that neither will even make the final three - something which last happened in 2006.

Modric is expected to be joined in the running by Kylian Mbappe and Raphael Varane, both of whom were part of the French World Cup-winning team in Russia.

Varane also won the Champions League with Real Madrid alongside Modric and Ronaldo, while 19-year-old Mbappe helped Paris Saint-Germain to a domestic treble prior to his World Cup triumph.
