Lamine Yamal makes history in Barcelona's loss to Real Madrid

Lamine Yamal created more history on Saturday afternoon when he took to the field during Barcelona's 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in La Liga.

The Spain international was overlooked for a start in El Clasico, but he entered the field in the 77th minute, replacing Joao Cancelo, who had been given the nod further forward.

Yamal has therefore broken an 82-year El Clasico record, becoming the youngest-ever player to feature in the famous fixture.

The record had been held by Vicente Martinez, who was 16 years and 278 days old when he played for Barcelona against Real Madrid in 1941.

Yamal is 16 years and 107 days old, meaning that he has comfortably broken the record, but he was unable to prevent his side from suffering a loss, as Jude Bellingham scored twice to secure all three points for Real Madrid.

Barcelona boss Xavi admitted after the match that his side "were not effective" against Real Madrid.

However, the club's legendary former midfielder paid tribute to the performances of midfield duo Fermin Lopez and Gavi during the clash with Carlo Ancelotti's side.

"Gavi had a defensive role to recover the ball, and play aggressively. He controlled Madrid very well," Xavi said during his post-match press conference.

"He was sensational. He played a great game. He is the soul of the team. Today, he played more as a pivot and did very well. He gives us intensity that is fundamental in this team.

"Fermin is an exceptional player that can be at Barcelona for many years to come."

Xavi also admitted that Bellingham "made the difference" for Real Madrid on the afternoon.

"Bellingham is a great footballer, of course, and he made the difference. In the second goal, he runs late into the box, and we had talked about that play before the match. It's our mistake while defending," he added.

Barcelona will be aiming to bounce back from the defeat when they travel to Real Sociedad in La Liga next Saturday, before taking on Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha both made their returns from injury on Saturday, while Jules Kounde was back on the bench after recovering from a knee problem. body check tags ::
