Keith Curle appointed new manager at Northampton

Curle stepped down as Carlisle manager at the end of the season.

Northampton have appointed Keith Curle as their new manager.

The Sky Bet League Two strugglers parted company with Dean Austin on Sunday night and have moved swiftly to bring in Curle on a deal until the end of next season.

The 54-year-old has been out of work since the end of last season when he stepped down as Carlisle manager.

Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas said: "In the position we are in we thought we needed a manager with a lot of experience of League Two and Keith has that.

"He has managed around 400 games at this level and we think he is exactly who we need right now."

Curle has also brought in Colin West as his assistant, with Andy Todd leaving the club.

Thomas added: "He took over at Carlisle United in similar circumstances and did an excellent job, not only steering them out of trouble but developing a squad that was able to challenge for promotion in the following seasons.

"We were keen to move quickly and after discussions and finalising paperwork today, Keith and Colin have met the players and staff.

"They were determined to take charge of the team for the game on Tuesday night (against Bury) to try and have an impact rather than just have a watching brief."

Northampton are 21st in League Two had have won just once in 12 games in all competitions this season.
