Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urges David de Gea to sign new Manchester United contract

By , Football League Correspondent | 4d
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits that it is important Manchester United do not allow David de Gea to run down his contract, which has 18 months left to run.

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he hopes to see David de Gea follow in Anthony Martial's footsteps by signing a new deal.

Martial was talked into extending his contract earlier this week after returning to his best form under Solskjaer, just months after being strongly tipped to depart Old Trafford.

United are now working on fresh terms for De Gea, who will become a free agent at the end of next season as things stand, but recent reports suggest that negotiations have stalled.

Solskjaer admits the importance of keeping a player of the Spanish goalkeeper's stature tied down, telling reporters: "The club's working on a few players. I don't know how far we are, but it's a statement from the club we want to keep our best players."

De Gea has featured 344 times for United across his seven-and-a-half-year spell with the club.
