David de Gea 'to be offered lucrative new Manchester United deal'

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly on the verge of signing a lucrative new contract which would make him one of the best-paid keepers ever.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly on the verge of signing a lucrative new deal with the club.

De Gea has just one year remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford, although United have the option to extend that by a further 12 months.

Talks have been ongoing for the past six months over an extension, though, and The Mirror reports that the two parties are finally close to agreeing terms.

The proposed deal would make De Gea one of the best-paid goalkeepers of all time, with the Spaniard rumoured to be in line to earn around £40m over the next five years.

The 27-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent years, and Los Blancos' ongoing interest was understood to be a stumbling block in negotiations when United thought an agreement had been reached in June.

However, Madrid have since signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea, seemingly ending their interest in De Gea once and for all and paving the way for the shot-stopper to commit his future to United.

De Gea joined United in 2011 and has since gone on to make 316 appearances for the club across all competitions.
