Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has encouraged long-serving defender Jerome Boateng to leave the club this summer.

Boateng has just completed his eighth campaign at the Allianz Arena, with a total of 263 appearances being made in all competitions.

However, Boateng's form during the latest campaign was mixed, and it has resulted in Hoeness giving the green light for the German to take on a new challenge.

Hoeness told BR: "I would recommend him as a friend to leave the club. He needs a new challenge, recently he has seemed out of place."

Manchester United have previously been linked with an approach for Boateng, while Arsenal could potentially regard the 30-year-old as an ideal addition to their backline.

The former Manchester City man still has two years remaining on his contract.
