Manchester United have confirmed that John Murtough has stepped down from his role as football director.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group are currently leading an overhaul at Old Trafford after acquiring a minority stake in Man United earlier this year.

INEOS were believed to be keen for Murtough to remain in his position until the end of the season, but he has ultimately decided the time is right to leave the club following more than 10 years of service.

Ratcliffe told the club's website: "We want to thank John for his loyal service over many years, and for his support and integrity during this period of transition. He leaves with our best wishes for the future."

Co-chairman Joel Glazer added: "After 11 years of tireless work for the club, John has mutually agreed with us that now is the right time to step aside and allow the new football leadership structure to be put in place. He will always be welcome back at Manchester United as a friend of the club."

Murtough departs after a decade at Old Trafford

Murtough joined Man United in 2013 after previously working for the Premier League as well as Everton and Fulham.

The 50-year-old was promoted to the club's head of football development in 2016, before he was appointed Man United's football director in 2021.

While he is said to have a good reputation inside the club, Murtough has faced criticism for the role that he has played in Man United's transfer business in recent years.

With Murtough now set to leave Old Trafford, his duties are expected to be shared before the Red Devils finalise at least two crucial appointments.

Who will replace Murtough?

Murtough's post will be effectively replaced by Dan Ashworth, who is poised to become a key figure in Man United's new football operations structure.

Newcastle United's sporting director will begin work with the Red Devils once his period of gardening leave ends or Man United agree a compensation package with the Magpies.

The 20-time English champions are also hoping to agree compensation with Southampton for Jason Wilcox to become their new technical director.

Darren Fletcher is currently working as the club's technical director, but INEOS are keen to find another role for the former Man United midfielder.
