Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has said that he 'does not know' whether Marcus Rashford will be available for Sunday's EFL Cup final against Newcastle United.

The England international was replaced in the 88th minute of his side's 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the second leg of their Europa League knockout round playoff on Thursday night.

After the match, Rashford sparked injury fears when he posted an image on Instagram of himself walking off the pitch with his boot in his hand, accompanied by a bandaged emoji.

Ten Hag was asked about the 25-year-old during his press conference to preview the EFL Cup final, and the Dutchman could not guarantee that the team's leading goalscorer would be available.

"I don't know," Ten Hag told reporters when asked if Rashford would feature against the Magpies.

"Players are now coming in, we have to do investigations, medical, of course, yesterday we did. So straight after a game most of the time you can't say, you have to wait for a 100% diagnosis. So let's do the medical, the work, we have to wait."

The Englishman has been in excellent form for the Red Devils during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring 24 goals and registering nine assists in 37 appearances in all competitions.

Rashford has five goals and two assists in five EFL Cup outings this term, but Man United now face an anxious wait before it is determined whether the attacker will be available to take on Eddie Howe's side.

"The key word is intensity. They do really well, they're an annoying team to play against, so we have to find a way to win. They try to annoy you. We have to make sure we play our game and focus on our game," said Ten Hag when quizzed on the challenge facing his side this weekend.

"Yeah [they are annoying]. For instance, so if you see the referees want to play an effective time. They [Newcastle] have the lowest in the league and they are quite successful with it.

"So it's up to us that we get speed in the game and we are also then dependent on the refereeing as well.

"It's a great opportunity to get the silverware in, football is all about glory and honour. We deserve to play in the final and we have a great chance to win the cup. The fans are waiting for it [a trophy], so we'll do everything we can."

Anthony Martial has recently returned to the training field, with the Frenchman working his way back from a hip problem, but he is not yet in full training, and Ten Hag has ruled the striker out of this match.

"No, he will not be available," the Dutchman said when asked whether Martial had a chance of making the squad, having recently been pictured back on the pitches at Carrington.

Man United came from a goal behind to beat Barcelona 2-1 in the second leg of their Europa League knockout round playoff on Thursday, which saw them prevail 4-3 to advance to the round of 16, where they have been drawn against more La Liga opposition in the shape of Real Betis.
