Pep Guardiola: 'Manchester City must be patient with Phil Foden'

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola suggests that he will not rush the development of Phil Foden, despite an injury to Kevin De Bruyne.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested that he intends to remain patient with the development of Phil Foden.

The playmaker only turned 18 in May, but Guardiola has already handed four starts and seven substitute outings to the young Englishman in all competitions.

An injury to Kevin De Bruyne could see Foden involved on a more regular basis, but Guardiola has indicated that he will not rush the progression of the academy graduate.

The Spaniard told Sky Sports News: "Of course Phil is special, but he is a young player so we have to be patient. His behaviour is important. On and off the pitch he is excellent, that is the first step to becoming a good player.

"He will play a lot of minutes and have games to play and go step by step. We cannot forget he is 18 so he is young. Be patient, work hard, listen and see what happens, we will help him to be a better player."

Foden is expected to feature in the squad when City face Huddersfield Town at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
