Vying for a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City welcome Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle to the Etihad Stadium for a fifth-round tie on Saturday evening.

Pep Guardiola's side secured a narrow 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night to boost their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Miron Muslic's Plymouth rescued a point in a 1-1 draw with 10-man Cardiff City last weekend to move them to within three points of safety in the second tier.

Both teams have now shifted their attention to the FA Cup, and ahead of this weekend's contest, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 20
Man City wins: 11
Draws: 4
Plymouth wins: 5

Manchester City and Plymouth Argyle have faced each other a total of 20 times across all competitions and it is the Citizens who lead the overall head-to-head record having posted 11 victories compared to the Pilgrims' five, while four draws have been played out between the two clubs.

Their very first meeting took place back in October 1938 when they shared the spoils in a goalless stalemate in the old Division Two, the first of 14 encounters between these two sides in the second tier of English football.

Plymouth initially enjoyed slightly more success in this fixture, as they came out on top four times in their first nine meetings with Man City, including three wins in four league matches between March 1964 and November 1965.

However, since then, the Citizens have dominated this fixture, recording eight wins and two draws across their last 11 meetings with Plymouth in all tournaments.

The first-ever cup tie between Man City and Plymouth took place in January 1974 when the Citizens won a two-legged EFL Cup semi-final 3-1 on aggregate, before losing to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Man City recorded their biggest victory over Plymouth to date in November 1987, winning 6-2 at Maine Road in the first round of the Full Members' Cup. The Pilgrims responded by beating the Citizens 3-2 at Home Park in Division Two - their most recent win over City.

Since then, Man City have won each of their last five matches against Plymouth by an aggregate score of 13-4, including a 6-3 away win in the EFL Cup second round in October 1988.
