Ex-Liverpool player and coach Sammy Lee 'honoured' to join rivals Everton

Sammy Lee admits that he feels 'honoured' to be part of Everton's coaching staff, despite his association with Liverpool.

Former Liverpool player and coach Sammy Lee has spoken of his joy in making the jump to Merseyside rivals Everton.

The 58-year-old was selected as part of Sam Allardyce's coaching staff at Goodison Park following the ex-Sunderland manager's appointment last week.

Lee has worked alongside Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers, the England national team and Crystal Palace, but he is mainly known for his association with Liverpool.

The retired midfielder spent a 10-year spell at Anfield and also had coaching roles on the red half of Merseyside.

When asked by the club's official website if it was an easy decision to join the Toffees, Lee said: "Yes, it was. This is a fantastic football club and people know my history, people know my affiliation to Liverpool but I'm also affiliated to Liverpool as a city and I think for me to be given the opportunity to work here at Everton, it's an honour and a pleasure.

"It's a global football club and nobody needs to be educated [on that] wherever they are. People know about Everton Football Club, people know about the history here, people know about the quality here, and you just have to walk around [Finch Farm] to see the plans they have put in here to make sure the future is bright going forward.

"It's a big challenge, it's certainly one I'm looking forward to and I'll be doing my utmost to get the best out of this football club."

Lee won three league titles at Liverpool.
