Hull City have established a three-point gap between themselves and the Premier League's bottom three after a goalless draw at Southampton.

The hosts were in control of proceedings for most of the game but were unable to find the breakthrough, with Tigers goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic keeping out a Dusan Tadic penalty in stoppage time.

Marco Silva's side were quick out of their starting blocks, Saints stopper Fraser Forster left motionless as Kamil Grosicki's dipping free kick clipped the left-hand upright six minutes in.

Rattled woodwork aside, there was not much in terms of high-octane action for the remainder of the first half, with Grosicki's tame effort on the stroke of half time the only shot on target of the opening 45 minutes.

The second half was also rather bereft of action until the dying stages, when Maya Yoshida was hauled down by Alfred N'Diaye in the area to gift Southampton a penalty.

With hearts in mouths both among the away contingent at St Mary's as well as at Sunderland, where their survival ultimately hinged on the spot kick, Jakupovic guessed correctly to deny Tadic low to his left from 12 yards and keep the Humbersiders in with a shout of survival.
