Eintracht Frankfurt are crowned Europa League winners after beating Rangers 5-4 on penalties in the final at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Wednesday night.

The two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes, as Joe Aribo's 57th-minute opener was cancelled out by a close-range strike from Rafael Borre 12 minutes later.

Aaron Ramsey came off the bench in the closing stages of extra time in preparation to step up in the penalty shootout, but the Welshman's effort from 12 yards was saved by Kevin Trapp, with Borre netting Frankfurt's fifth and final spot kick to crown the German outfit champions, claiming their first European trophy since 1980.

After a closely-fought goalless first half, Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men made the breakthrough in the 57th minute when Aribo capitalised on a slip by Tuta, with the Nigerian running through on goal before calmly rolling his strike past Trapp into the bottom corner.

The Glaswegian giants could only hold onto their lead for 12 minutes, however, as Colombian striker Borre pounced on an inviting cross into the six-yard box from Filip Kostic to draw Oliver Glasner's side level.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages but the tie was eventually forced into extra time. Energy levels understandably dropped as the game progressed due to the scorching hot weather conditions in Seville.

However, there was still plenty of time for either side to find a winner and Rangers thought they had snatched it in the 117th minute, but Trapp made a crucial save to keep out Ryan Kent from just a few yards out.

That miss from the Gers, as well as Ramsey's effort in the shootout, proved costly as Frankfurt netted five perfect penalties to clinch Europa League glory.

Frankfurt's triumph means they will be competing in the Champions League next season, while Rangers will have to come through the qualifiers if they wish to compete in Europe's most prestigious club competition in 2022-23. body check tags ::
