Chelsea looking to extend Champions League unbeaten record against Real Madrid

Chelsea can extend an unbeaten Champions League record when they face Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

When facing the current holders of the competition, Chelsea are unbeaten in their last six encounters, with Porto the last reigning champions to beat them, back in 2004.

That six-game unbeaten streak against defending champions is already a record for the competition, and Chelsea could stretch that to seven if they avoid defeat in the Spanish capital this week.

Chelsea also have an excellent record in Spain in this competition, losing only one of their last nine knockout matches away to Spanish opposition.

A remarkable quarter-final tie between the two sides last season saw Chelsea win at the Bernabeu, but exit the competition after extra time, despite coming back from a 3-1 deficit in the home leg - their only ever defeat to Real Madrid in Europe.

The sides also met in the semi-finals during the 2020-21 season, with Chelsea coming out victorious on that occasion, meaning the winners of this tie in the last two seasons have gone on to win the Champions League.

Karim Benzema was Chelsea's nemesis last season, scoring a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge before netting the extra-time winner in the second leg, and his excellent recent record against English clubs is cause for concern for Frank Lampard's men.

All of Benzema's last 10 goals in the Champions League have come against English clubs, as he followed up his four against Chelsea with another three against Manchester City in last year's semi-finals, and three more against Liverpool in the last 16 this season. body check tags ::
