Kovac laments late lapses as Bayern drop another two points

Bayern are four points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Niko Kovac has urged his Bayern Munich players to cut out late lapses in concentration after conceding an 89th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Freiburg.

Bayern appeared on course for a third successive Bundesliga win following Serge Gnabry’s strike with 10 minutes from time at the Allianz Arena.

But the visitors frustrated the German champions and left Bavaria with a point thanks to Lucas Holer’s dramatic leveller.

Head coach Kovac has now seen his team fail to win any of their last four home games in all competitions, including a 1-1 draw with Augsburg in which they also let in a late goal.

“We take the lead and we cannot let that be taken away from us as Bayern Munich,” said Kovac, according to the club’s official website.

“We also have to clear the balls earlier and try not to play around there.

“But it is the way it is.

“It was also in the 89th minute against Augsburg. These are four points we are missing now. We are disappointed about that.”

Saturday’s result leaves Bayern four points adrift of early leaders Borussia Dortmund.

A frustrating afternoon, which saw Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben fail to convert good first-half opportunities, looked set for a positive ending when Germany winger Gnabry found the bottom right corner in the 80th minute.

The hosts were unable to hold on though as forward Holer fired past Manuel Neuer to stretch Freiburg’s unbeaten league run to four games.

Bayern goalkeeper Neuer says his team need to maintain a performance for the full 90 minutes.

“We have not shone in recent weeks. Since you cannot play with ease, that’s clear,” he said.

“Nevertheless, we have sequences in the game where we do it really well.

“The question is why we cannot maintain it.

“Mistakes can happen, but that such a game tilts, that’s a bit questionable.”

Freiburg coach Christian Streich felt his team made it tough for Bayern but were also reliant on good fortunate.

“We defended well and in the end we had the necessary luck,” he said.

“I must also say that it is extremely difficult for Bayern, if a team plays so defensive.

“Of course, our boys are running like madmen, so it’s not easy to play.”
