Dark drama Yellowjackets is given the go-ahead for a third season, months before the premiere of the second.

Showtime has officially renewed Yellowjackets for a third season to air in 2024.

The news comes months before the premiere of season two of the dark drama, which stars Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey and Tawny Cypress.

The show is set in 1996 and the present day, following a group of high school girls whose plane crashed in the Canadian wilderness.

The first season was a breakout hit, averaging 5 million viewers an episode and garnering seven Primetime Emmy nominations.

Showtime president Chris McCarthy said: "With Yellowjackets' runaway success in season one and the pent-up anticipation for season two, we wanted to maximise the momentum by fast tracking season three now.

"The show's ambition is only exceeded by its execution, and I thank the incredible creative team behind it for turning this into such a success."

Season two premieres on Sunday, March 26 on Showtime in the US and the following day on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
