ITV has released the first trailer for its new drama Stonehouse, based on the astonishing story of '70s Labour minister John Stonehouse.

Succession's Matthew Macfadyen portrays the MP - a high-flying member of Harold Wilson's government - who decided to fake his own death in 1974 in order to start a new life in Australia with his secretary.

Stonehouse's wife Barbara - played by Macadyen's real-life wife Keeley Hawes - was devastated by the news of his supposed demise, but within months the truth came out as he was arrested in Australia, initially on suspicion of being Lord Lucan.

Stonehouse airs over three nights on ITV1 starting on Monday, January 2.
