Channel 4 has commissioned a new "social experiment" series in which monogamous couples will explore the possibility of having open relationships.

In Open, sex therapists and relationship coaches will help the curious couples to decide whether they would be happier welcoming new sexual partners into their relationships.

As part of the process the couples will undergo "a series of intimate challenges" to help determine if they are ready to take the next step.

Channel 4 commissioning editor Tim Hancock said: "This provocative new series confronts a profound and unsettling question that is rarely asked openly – but with the insight, warmth and sensitivity of the best factual entertainment formats."

The six-part series is expected to air later this year or early next year.
