The Academy says that Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars after he assaulted Chris Rock but refused to do so.

Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars on Sunday night but refused to do so, the Academy has revealed.

In an incredible moment broadcast live to the world, the 53-year-old stormed the stage and assaulted Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Despite his actions, Smith remained in place for the remainder of the ceremony and went on to collect the Best Actor award for his role in King Richard.

The Academy has launched a full investigation into what happened and could decide to expel or suspend Smith's membership as a result.

In a statement to Variety, organisers revealed that in the aftermath of the assault, Smith was asked to leave the building but would not be moved.

"Mr. Smith's actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television," it said.

"Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.

"Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated. While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently."

The board of the Academy will meet on April 18 to discuss action against Smith, who has since issued a public apology to Rock.
