New Zealand have ended day two of the first Test with England holding an advantage of 171 runs after just 23.1 overs were possible on Friday.

The opening day's play saw England bowled out for 58 and New Zealand had wanted to pile on the misery having reached 175-3 by the close of play.

However, rain gave England a brief respite, with New Zealand only able to add a further 54 runs to take their total to 229-4.

Kane Williamson reached his 18th Test century before James Anderson trapped him in front of his stumps for 102, but the Black Caps remain in a strong position ahead of day three.

Henry Nicholls and BJ Watling are currently at the crease on 49 and 17 respectively.
