Result: New Zealand secure victory over England in first Test

New Zealand bowl England out for 320 to take victory in the first Test against their visitors by an innings and 49 runs.

New Zealand have bowled England out for 320 to take victory in the first Test against their visitors by an innings and 49 runs.

England began the day on 132-3 after Joe Root had been dismissed at the end of day four, but three wickets apiece for Neil Wagner and Todd Astle ensured that the Black Caps took a 1-0 lead in the series.

Dawid Malan was first to go for 23 runs, and as Jonny Bairstow (26) and Moeen Ali (28) failed to add considerable weight to England's push, Ben Stokes, Malan's opening partner on the final day, and Chris Woakes, in for Ali, both achieved half-centuries.

Stokes and Woakes were at the crease for a combined 306 balls, but England's remaining batsmen, Craig Overton and James Anderson, were both bowled by Astle for three and one respectively.

The second Test will begin in Christchurch on Thursday.
