India edge opening day of first Test match with England

England lose five wickets for 62 runs as India reduce the hosts to 285-9 at stumps on the first day of the opening Test at Edgbaston.

India have edged the first day of the opening Test match with England after dominating the final session at Edgbaston.

England were successful in winning the toss on Wednesday morning, and after Keaton Jennings had made 42, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow put together a fourth-wicket stand of 104 to give the home side control.

However, Root was cheaply run out for 80 and Umesh Yadav bowled Bairstow for 78, and England never recovered during the final 22 overs of the day.

Jos Buttler was dismissed for a duck and Ben Stokes, Adil Rashid and Stuart Broad got out for 21, 13 and one respectively as Ravichandran Ashwin ended the day with figures of 4-60.

Sam Curran made a resolute 24 to ensure that England were not bowled out within three sessions, but India have the upper hand with the hosts sitting on 285-9.
