Ben Foakes impresses with bat and gloves on England Test debut

A look at Foakes' impressive all-round display in England's first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Ben Foakes has enjoyed a memorable start to life as a Test cricketer in Galle.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at some of the achievements the 25-year-old has already got under his belt.

Batting

After coming in at 103 for five, Foakes went about rescuing the innings with a superb innings – ending day one 87 not out and completing his century on the second morning. In doing so he became England's 20th debut centurion and just the second to do so as wicketkeeper. The other, Matt Prior, was in attendance as a radio summariser. Foakes is already out on his own in terms of batting in Asia, though, as the only English gloveman to reach three figures on the continent.

Catching

When James Anderson found Dimuth Karunaratne's edge with a tempting outswinger, the resulting take was bread and butter for a keeper of Foakes' reputation. More remarkable than the catch was the timing – just the second ball of Foakes' first innings in the field. Only Australia's Peter Nevill, in the Lord's Ashes Test of 2015, has opened his account behind the stumps at such an early stage.

Stumping

If his first catch qualified as regulation, Foakes' first stumping was a much more accomplished affair and helped break Sri Lanka's best partnership of the innings. Dinesh Chandimal took a couple of steps down the track to Adil Rashid and spun back round after being beaten by turn on the outside edge. By then Foakes had tracked the flight, pouched the ball safely was in the process of whipping off the bails. The last time an England keeper had pulled off a stumping on debut was Bob Taylor in 1971.
